Neo-Prophetism: A New Strand of Charismatic Renewal Movement in the Presbyterian Church of Ghana

Abstract

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), rooted in Reformed theology and structured governance, confronts a growing challenge from neo-Prophetism—a hybrid movement blending traditional African prophetism, Pentecostal elements, and charismatic practices—amid broader Pentecostal influences in Ghana since the 1960s. This study examines the historical origins, contextual influences, and implications of neo-Prophetism within the PCG, arguing that while the church pragmatically accommodates prophetic gifts to meet congregants' spiritual needs, its opposition to a formal prophetic office fosters contradictions that hinder full integration, mirroring global tensions in World Christianity between historic denominations and renewal movements. Employing qualitative methods, including historical and phenomenological approaches, the research draws on secondary literature, document and media analysis, and interviews with Presbyterian ministers and self-identified prophets, framed by contextual theology. Key findings reveal the PCG's allowance of individual prophetic functions within congregations but resistance to hierarchical offices to preserve theological integrity, leading to tensions that could alienate charismatic members. In conclusion, neo-Prophetism invigorates worship and addresses sociocultural spiritual yearnings, yet risks schisms without reevaluation of their position on handling the prophetic calling. The study recommends developing inclusive frameworks for balancing tradition and renewal, contributing to scholarly understanding of Pentecostalization in African mainline churches and offering practical insights for denominational adaptation.
